Being a residential landlord in Baltimore, Maryland can be rather difficult at times due to, among other reasons, the public health problem of toxic lead. Lead (Pb) is a ubiquitous contaminant in the Baltimore area. It is virtually everywhere : in the air we inhale, in the drinking water, in the food and drink we ingest, and in other products.  It is particularly an issue in pre-1978 built apartments and houses. Potential and current residential landlords should be aware of this fact.

Lead does not easily go away. In fact, this heavy metal (Atomic Number 82) lasts, and lasts, and lasts. When inhaled or ingested, lead is harmful to the human body. It is a malleable, utilitarian metal that does not decay, dissipate, dissolve in water, nor burn. As a residential landlord in Baltimore, with its older (pre-1978 built) residential units, lead can be a nemesis. Never turn your back on this potential problem.
