Toxic lead is virtually everywhere in Baltimore : including in the air we breathe, in the water we drink, and in the items/products we inhale or ingest. It can also be in pre-1978 built housing. If you are planning to buy, rent or renovate housing in Baltimore, a few tips are in order, and may be helpful:
1. Unless you plan to (and in fact, eventually do) personally live in the residence, anyone you hire to act as a contractor or supervisor for the purpose of abating lead paint must be accredited by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).
2. Workers who perform any purposeful lead abatement work on residential rental properties in Baltimore must be trained by a training provider approved by the MDE.
3. Be aware at all times that toxic lead is considered to be a public health problem in Baltimore, especially for children from infancy up to six years of age
4. Houses and apartments built before 1978 may contain lead paint.
5. Houses and apartments built before 1950 are considered likely to contain lead paint.
6 . Dry scraping, dry sanding and burning of lead paint may release dangerous lead dust into the environment.
7. Ingestion and inhalation of lead dust are significant causes of lead poisoning in humans ---especially children.
8 Remember: Lead is a malleable, utilitarian, heavy metal (Atomic Number 82) that does not really decay, does not dissolve in water, does not dissipate, and does not burn. Lead (Pb) lasts, and lasts, and lasts --- including in the human body.
