There are at least thirteen (13) adjudicative guidelines for persons who require access to classified information. By itself, this information can be ominous; but, it should be noted that the guidelines are suppose to view the "whole-person" in determining whether the individual qualifies to access " classified "information. Further, there are varying degrees of classified information to be considered in several different agencies with several different rules and classifications of "classified" data.
A general synopsis to this discussion of the possible effects a DUI or DWI could have on a person's Federal security clearance could be as follows: The Federal adjudicative guidelines state that "...excessive alcohol consumption often leads to the exercise of questionable judgment or the failure to control impulses, and can raise questions about an individual's reliability and trustworthiness". Simply stated, the presumption is that alcohol abusers are more likely than others to engage in careless or in reckless behavior that can create an increased risk of unauthorized disclosure of classified information.
