Ignoring Lead-based Paint Problems Can Be Devastating To Tenants And Landlords.
According to repeated findings and reports by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), lead-based paint in good condition is usually not harmful. However, when that paint is disturbed, problems can begin to occur. Certainly for pre-1978 built residential units, they should br checked regularly for chipping, peeling or deterioration of paint, and any issues addressed immediately by professionals. Areas of the residential unit where painted surfaces rub together, like windows, should be regularly checked.
The EPA says, the residential maintenance person should carefully remove any paint chips or dust with a wet paper towel. Wipe down flat surfaces like window sills at least weekly with a wet paper towel, and then discard the towel.
Residential units with lead-based paint should be handled with extreme care. In doing so, landlords can ensure the safety of tenants as well as avoid potentially costly litigation.
