23 state attorneys general have joined (in amicus briefs) in asking the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to rule in favor of allowing public prayers to be said to start town board meetings;
arguing that such prayers should not be considered violations of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.
The Court will rule on this issue during its next term starting in October 2013.
The central case to be argued and decided is TOWN OF GREECE v. GALLOWAY (SCOTUS Docket
No. 12-696), which comes to the Court from Monroe County, New York, just outside of Rochester, through the Second Circuit U. S. Court of Appeals which has ruled that the practice is unconstitutional.
