The Maryland Department of Transportation's EZPASS road travel program was intended to provide a well-maintained, efficient and "affordable" system for vehicle drivers travel certain state roads with convenience. However, for both those with and without the EZPASS the experience can be a nightmare if you owe the State money for using the system.
I was just recently reading on-line an article about a man who had been billed an astounding $ 13,000
by the Maryland Central Collections Unit ("CCU") for pass-due EZPass costs and administrative fees over a three-year period. A couple of hours later I became even more astounded, and even stupefied, by a telephone call from a couple who claimed they had been notified by CCU of a whopping $ 38,000.00 collection notice for EZPass violations over the approximate same period of time. Finding this to be questionable, I called the couple in with their documents to see for myself.
It was true; their bill is $38,000. Further, the couple had absolutely no luck in speaking with anyone at EZPass or CCU to discuss the problem. Both agency representatives claimed the issue could only be resolved by the other agency [ Hmmmm. The old government deep black hole problem of non-acceptance by workers of authority or responsibility to help solve issues.
We are currently working with this couple to hopefully resolve this fiasco.
