" ... The Napoleonic Code took its place in American law, through the state of Louisiana,
by way of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase of 828,000 square miles of territory from France for the affordable price of $ 11,250,000 plus debt cancellation of $ 3,750,000. All totaled, including interest, the United States ultimately paid $ 23,213,568 for the Louisiana Territory, which presently encompasses Louisiana on both sides of the Mississippi River (including the city of New Orleans), Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, parts of Minnesota south of the Mississippi River, most of North Dakota, nearly all of South Dakota, northeastern New Mexico, northern Texas, the portions of Montana, Wyoming, and small portions of land that eventually became part of the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
With the dust having settled, so to speak, the Louisiana Purchase totals about 23 % of today's America ...."
