When cosmetic and elective surgical procedures cause harm to the patient, the plastic may be held responsible civilly. Despite the ever-present media image of plastic surgery being just a business with customers or clients, it is still actually medicine with patients. Not every doctor is properly trained to be a cosmetic or plastic surgeon, and not every plastic surgeon is properly qualified to perform every procedure. Further, everyone can make mistakes --- including plastic surgeons.
All surgical procedures carry a certain amount of risk. However, when a patient undergoes surgery, they are typically informed about the inherent dangers associated with the surgical procedure. In the vast majority of surgeries, the surgeon and medical team performing the procedures are highly skilled, properly trained and experienced enough to perform the surgery without committing errors. But, not all surgeries are successfully done without some type of errors. And, in some cases these surgical errors can lead to permanent injury or even death.
Just a few of the key issues in medical malpractice lawsuits over cosmetic and elective surgery include:
- infection;
- allergic reactions and other complications from anesthesia;
- hematomas or blood clotting under the skin;
- scarring
- drops in blood pressure;
- necrosis (insufficient supply of oxygen causing death of tissue);
- nerve damages;
- untenable side effects due to other drugs; and
- death due to severe complications.
- Liposuction;
- Rhinoplasty;
- Breast augmentation;
- Eyelid surgery;
- Tummy tuck;
- Face lift
- Dermabrasion
- Hair transplants;
- Breast reduction; and
- Lip augmentation.
